Humanity is such a strange thing, isn’t it? It only lasts for so long, then before you know it, poof, you’re dead. You only have so long here in the living world, you may as well make it worth your while. The temporary nature of life is all I can think about in these moments, the fleeting moments of my humanity.
My heart beats faster, faster as I run through the merciless, never-ending branches of the subway. There is a sharp pain running from my neck to my chest. I can feel it spreading. I don’t have much time. I need to hurry. I scramble up the stairs, into another relentless dash through the next corridor. The person who designed this system clearly hadn’t considered a fight or flight run for your-life type of scenario to go down here, it’s a horribly confusing labyrinth in here. I turn a sharp corner and nearly trip over my own feet.
I slow to a jog, then I stop. I don’t think it’s following me anymore, I think I can rest for a minute. I place my hand on the wall and attempt to catch my breath, heaving burning breaths in and out of my lungs. I can already feel my body starting to shut down. The infection moves remarkably fast. I carefully place my hand over the wound. It’s gushing blood, I expected that much. But I didn't consider its discoloration. It’s red, of course, but there’s a bitter, toxic-looking black marbled pattern within it. I consider the effect to be some sort of venom, but I'm not sure what it is. I know quite a bit about their kind, but there isn’t much information out there regarding what happens now.
A new, sharper pain arises from my stomach, similar to if someone stabbed me with a dagger. I nearly fall to the ground in pain, it’s almost too much to bear. I consider it for a moment, but a rhythmic thud, thud, thud sound snaps me back to reality. Its footsteps are growing closer by the moment.

-6 HOURS EARLIER-

I hate the day shift. It’s too bright, too loud, too busy, and too overstimulating. Abbie Mae asked me to cover her shift today, and I, being the simpleton I am, took the shift for her. Abb is one of the most fascinating people I have ever met, and I have secretly liked her since 3rd grade. When we graduated, and I started college here in Seattle, I thought I’d never see her again. Turns out, we were both stupid kids who went to work part-time at the same lousy department store, the glorious Big Bob’s Bargains and More “Your friendly neighborhood department store!”. I hate this job, I would probably quit if Abbie and my shifts didn’t line up two days of the week. Abb would have had to work today if her best friend hadn’t gotten hurt today. I don’t remember how, she wasn’t exactly the picture of clarity on the phone earlier. Car crash, maybe? A customer walks up to my register, snapping me out of my train of thought.
“Good afternoon, sir. Did you find everything okay?” I ask with my best customer service smile on.
“Fine.” the customer growled. Somebody is in a bad mood. I remained silent as I scanned and bagged his items. Canned green beans - boop, whole wheat bread - boop, a t-shirt with the American flag on it - boop, rinse and repeat.
The man seemed absorbed in whatever he was reading on his phone. I peeked over the register to peek at it. The headline was bold and pronounced, “LOCAL COLLEGE GIRL MISSING AFTER LIONESS CLUB CLOSES EARLY - COINCIDENCE?” Huh. I’ll have to look that up later. Maybe I know her? I looked back down and continued bagging. “Bobbie’s Fresh” blueberries - boop, cheap plastic earbuds from the checkout line - boop, a packet of hard candies- boop, a cheap box of cigarettes - boop, the neverending cycle.
“Your total today will come to $182.69.'' I try to sound cheerful like I'm not counting the seconds until I can leave.
“Sure.” the customer sighs and swipes his card.
“Thank you for shopping at Big Bob’s Bargains. Have a great rest of your day.” he walks away without another word. Rude… I think as I start to grab my things to leave. “Hey, Corey!” I shout two registers down.
“Huh?” he replies.
“Can you close this register for me? I’m running late,” I lie. I’m just far too tired.
“Uhh, yeah, sure. Let me finish with this customer, I'll get it right after.”
“Thanks, man. You’re awesome.” I thank him, and hurry out the main doors, trying to look like I'm in a rush. Thank god I’m off.

-PRESENT MOMENT-

I attempt to regain my pace, but I am moving noticeably slower than before. My strength begins to fade. No, no, I will not go down this easily. I need to keep going, I think, I am a man of honor, I can't give up– my thoughts begin to trail off after that, and my vision blurs as I slowly give in to the reassuring arms of unconsciousness.
