Today was pretty busy for me. So I'm in NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) at school. I am on the rifle team meaning I do the fancy rifle spinning yada yada. The usual guy that leads (Haslett pronounced Haisley) Broke his ankle the other day. This sneaky jerkface has been training me to replace him (he's a senior I'm a sophomore) without my knowing it. I genuinely figured he was giving me extra 1-on-1 training cause I sucked at it. Well nope turns out I'm a natural, and he has been training me since I started with the rifles. Well fast forward to today, I have the running half of my PFA (Physical Fitness Assessment. Really big deal in ROTC) Or so I thought. Nope Haslett comes into the room in crutches and the first thing I think is "Oh Shoot We are soooo screwed. Then Haslett talks to our NSI (Naval Science Instructor) Senior Chief and asks if I can replace him as the lead for the rifle team. Senior looks at me then back at Haslett and says "Do you think she's ready?" Here I am trying not to freak out because I don't think I'm good enough, then I register what he says, and I'm wondering what the hell he means by "do you think she's ready?" And of course, this [censored] just grins and says "well I trained her didn't I?" So here's a little background information about Haslett and I; We don't really get along. He was always the a** that nobody liked. I put up with him for the simple reason of, he could teach me what I needed to know so that I could advance in rank. That's it. So this little fact has me wondering what I did for such high praise. Anyways, after Haslett said that Senior Chief looked at me and asked if I wanted to do it. And of course, I chose 3 hours of agonizing training over running a mile in 6 minutes. They had to get me a uniform to wear because I wasn't even supposed to be in the pep rally. They literally had to STAPLE the pants so they weren't too long. They managed to get my hair right and my uniform straight in under 15 minutes. I give props to the two women who dealt with me. My hair is a real pain to deal with on a good day and today was NOT a good day, when I say this I mean it with complete respect and admiration. I don't know if these girls worked their miracles because they were black, and textured hair is so much worse than thick, wavy, extremely tangled white girl hair, but these girls were fantastic and I seriously owe them my life. While the girls were doing my hair and cleaning my face (had face paint and makeup on in the school colors again I wasn't supposed to be on the team today) The guys were ironing my uniform and shining my shoes, and Senior Chief was finding my rank and ribbons. Haslett was making sure I knew all of the commands and timing. Once the pep rally actually started the color guard team held the flags (American and Navy) They had me sing the national anthem. something else unplanned. And that's when the rifle team started. I am so glad that The team realized that I hadn't led an actual routine before, and were very patient with me. while we were performing the entire gym was silent (THE ENTIRE FRIGGIN SCHOOL) They had this tiny microphone thing on the shirt of my uniform so the entire gym could hear my orders (this was extremely nerve-racking) I would say something like "Platoon halt" and the team would take a step the step their feet together in sync and yell "STEP TOGETHER" along with many, many, many more commands and perfect executions of them. If I tried to explain them all to you, I'd be typing for hours. After the rifle session I had to play tug of war and musical chairs. I had to sing more, and then the results for it all finally came in. The NJROTC unit's rifle team won. Haslett Arrogantly on crutches comes over to me and while laughing says "well you won a competition you're in charge now" and this point my feet throat and head and killing me. So being the navy brat I am I respond with "ARE YOU F****** KIDDING ME?!? The [censored] just looks at me laughs and walks away, leaving me very angry and tired, so yes I had a very busy day
