FIRST CHAPTER!!!
-
Ok, so I had some requests to keep sharing the story, so here is the very first chapter.
Chapter I
Pawn ShopsDawn was roaming the streets of Brooklyn in her plain black tee shirt tucked into her cargo pants with the help of a black belt and a leather jacket overtop. She had her combat boots on, which made her about one inch taller. She wore dark sunglasses in the shape of stars which blocked the view of her beautiful green eyes. Her long brown hair let down as she walked the streets with her hands in her pockets.
She turned the corner as a boy about her age, although he didn’t look like it, bumped into her. Well, it was really the other way around. She ran straight into the man's chest, but instead of yelling at her to watch where she was going like every other New Yorker, he simply apologized.
“I am so sorry.” He looked down at her with gorgeous blue eyes, He towered over her at six foot. It may have only been four inches, but it seemed like a lot more to Dawn.
She looked up and opened her mouth, but didn’t find any words coming out. She took a deep breath and tried once more to speak. This time she managed to spit out a small sentence, “It wasn’t your fault, I wasn’t paying attention.” She continued to look at him, but now she was just mesmerized by his beautiful eyes.
He looked into her eyes, which were blocked by the sunglasses, and tried to find the right words, “I should…uhhh…probably get going now.”
“Yeah, me too.” She smiled slightly, a fake smile, hoping it would be enough to fool the man.
“Nice bumping into you, though.” He paused, “Quite literally.” He chuckled and began to walk into the direction he was headed.
“Ugh, I hate people.” She dropped the fake smile and continued walking down the street, not really sure of where she was headed, she was just walking, “He had nice eyes, though.” She whispered quietly to herself.
A few blocks down from where she ran into that man, was a coffee shop, and, boy was Dawn dying for a coffee. She entered the shop and the bell on the door chimed as she opened the door and stepped in. The cashier gestured to her to come order, and so she did. Dawn checked over the menu for about five seconds, trying to make it seem like she was thinking about what she had wanted to get to drink. She looked at the barista, put on a fake smile and tried to sound calm, “Can I get a large iced coffee with vanilla cold foam…please?” She did as she was hoping and spoke in a nice calm manner.
“Sure thing. What would be the name for that?”
“Dawn. D-A-W-N.” The barista wrote the order on a cup and began to make the coffee.
“Alright, that’ll be $5.25.” Dawn handed her a five dollar bill and a quarter and made her way to the other end of the coffee shop where people stood waiting for their coffee or food.
“Dawn, your iced coffee.” She held up the cup and set it gently on the counter. Dawn edged over and grabbed her coffee and began to walk out of the store. Dawn looked around and began to walk down the sidewalk once more, eventually reaching what seemed to be a shopping plaza. There were signs and cars everywhere. One sign read Fresh Produce For Sale, another read Jewelry And Beads. She walked around for a bit, looking for something that might interest her.
Not too long after walking around, she found a pawn shop with cheap prices and decided to check it out. She stepped in the door, and once more, a bell chimed. A man behind the counter and the register looked at her with tattoos all over his body. He gave her a cold glare and finally spoke, “This ain’t a place for little girls to run around in, now get lost.” He smirked and chuckled.
“Call me a little girl one more time, I dare you!” She had fury in her eyes. She always picked fights with people she barely knew, it was a specialty.
“Or what? You're gonna run to your mommy?”
“My moms dead. Murdered.” She smiled and laughed.
“That’s funny?”
“Yep!” She smiled.
“You’re cold, kid, stone cold.” He looked curious and mesmerized as to how she could be so happy about her mother’s death.
“It’s a specialty.” She looked around, “Anyways, you got any switchblades in here?”
“Of course, why would you like to know? You’re just a little girl, what will you do with it?” He chuckled again, not caring much about what she said earlier about calling her a little girl.
“I said…don’t call me that.” She couldn’t hold her rage, so she threw her arm up and punched the man behind the register. It was a powerful blow. It knocked him back into the wall as he stumbled. She looked at him with an entertained look on her face, “Now, the switchblades?”
“Y-yes ma’am.” He stumbled back and opened the glass drawers underneath the register. He pulled out a box with an assortment of colors and different variations of switch knives. He out the box on the counter, “This is what we’ve got.” He gestures to the knives.
“Alright.” She digs through and happens to pull out a knife that she found suited her best. It had a base color of black but had green lining where the leather of the outside was stitched together. She placed it on the counter, “How much?” She looked at him.
“O-on the house…for all the trouble I caused you, in fact get anything you want i-it’ll be free.” He looked afraid of her, and she liked that. She enjoyed being the dominant person, the boss. She found joy in people fearing her.
She walked around the store looking for something she might like. She only found a pair of fishnet gloves. Black ones, in fact. She held them up to the shopkeeper, “I’ll have these too.” She walked out the door before he could even say anything else. He wouldn’t have been able to say anything anyways, he was too afraid. She stepped out into the streets once more and felt the breeze around her. She took one fishnet glove from her hand and put it on her left arm. It went up to where her elbow would have started. She put the other on the right, pulling it the same length as the other.
She began to backtrack her steps, she walked past the coffee shop, and where she bumped into the boy. She eventually made it to where she was hoping to go. She looked at the sign. Knife fights, ha! Just what I was looking for, she took a moment to think and then began across the street. She made sure no cars were coming her way before stepping out. She didn’t know why she did, though. No one would care if I got hit anyways. Nobody would go to the funeral. Better yet, nobody would want to plan it. She laughed at the thought, although she knew she shouldn’t have. While still chuckling, a man walked past Dawn. He made sure that he was far enough away that if anything did happen, he wouldn’t be the victim. He looked at her as if she was insane. I can’t blame him, though, so would I. She was laughing about nothing.
Once finished enjoying the laughter of the thoughts in her head, Dawn made her way toward where the knife fights were being held. She crossed the street without looking whether cars were coming her way or not. She didn’t care anymore. As she stepped out, a car came speeding her way, but she still continued crossing the street. She got to the other side of the street and headed into the alley way. She came upon a sign that pointed in toward an old warehouse. It read, Knife fights here.
As she walked into the old warehouse, a man stopped her, “Kids don’t belong here.” He had a stern look on his face. She examined him and identified him as a security guard. She tried not to get angry, it wasn’t easy. She hated people, a very strong word, but the truth.
“I’m not a kid, and I do belong here.” She glared at him, trying to hold her anger in as he studied her.
He finally spoke, breaking the silence, “You got a knife?” He was still examining her with curiosity.
She whipped the knife from her pocket and bared the blade. The man flinched a bit and she chuckled. “What? You afraid of some fifteen year old girl?” She smirked at him and he stood tall again. She chuckled as he moved from the door, allowing her entry. “Thank you.” She nodded and glared at him while walking in.
